"But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken." Matthew 12:36

A banker was appalled when his awkward teenage son began wearing ragged clothing and an earring in his ear. His first impulse was to demand that his son "shape up and clean up." But before he said anything, he thought, My son must feel that he isn’t a part of the school crowd. He’s dressing this way to feel accepted. Rather than work on his dress code, I need to work on his esteem.

So a few weeks later, the father invited his son to go with hin to his annual banker’s club banquet. The two had a great time. Even though the son sported a streak of orange in his hair, he wore a suit to the event and behaved superbly, recalling the names of his father’s friends and conversing confidently with them. He had responded to the unspoken message of his father’s invitation: "Son, I’m proud of you."

Criticism wounds and tears down. Praise heals and builds up. Your child will encounter plenty of criticism in his or her life, without any of it coming from you. Part of "raising" a child is to literally raise their self-esteem and sights to new horizons, and to raise their level of faith. That kind of raising is the product of praising.

Dsc02657Lanzhou, also Lan-chou or Lanchow, city, northern China, capital of Gansu Province, a major transportation and industrial center on the Huang He (Yellow River). It is one of China’s leading petrochemical and nuclear power centers; other manufactures include machinery, tools, railroad equipment, chemicals, fertilizer, aluminum, and rubber goods. Coal is mined nearby, and petroleum is shipped here by pipeline from Yumen. Main road and rail routes to Inner Mongolia and oil-rich northwestern China pass through the city. Lanzhou University is here. An old walled city, founded before the 6th century BC, Lanzhou gained early importance as an overland travel center between Central Asia and China’s historic heartland in the Wei River valley. Its modern transformation into a major industrial city occurred during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) and the late 1950s. Population (1991) 1,453,645.
